Who we are
Situated on the northern edge of Amsterdam, Nordend Gallery is devoted to exceptional 20th-century and contemporary design, with a focus on the cultural legacy of Scandinavian and Alpine craftsmanship. The gallery presents a carefully curated collection of collectible furniture and objects, each selected for its material integrity, refined construction, and timeless relevance.
At Nordend, collecting design is an act of preservation, storytelling, and care. With a foundation in anthropological and documentary research, the gallery uncovers rare and often overlooked works—found in remote villages, local Scandinavian auctions, or alpine dwellings—and brings them into a contemporary context. Each piece is restored with precision, documented thoroughly, and presented as part of a broader narrative on heritage and design.
Just like in high-end furniture design, Nordend’s approach is about going to the essence—stripping away the superfluous to reveal the core. It is a pursuit akin to that of an alpinist in the mineral world above the tree line: raw, honest, and elevated in its clarity. This ethos informs every aspect of the gallery’s practice, from acquisition and research to photography and curation.
Founded by a filmmaker and researcher with a deep interest in material culture and traditional craftsmanship, Nordend evolved from a personal collection into a gallery that bridges aesthetics with cultural inquiry. Alongside its exhibitions, Nordend maintains in-house documentation, photography, and restoration facilities, ensuring that each object is treated with the respect and precision it deserves.
Featured designers include Hans Wegner, Axel Einar Hjorth, Alvar Aalto, Pierre Chapo, and Ib Kofod-Larsen, alongside anonymous rural makers whose work captures the spirit of vernacular design. A select group of contemporary artisans continues this legacy, interpreting traditional forms through a modern lens.
Nordend Gallery invites its visitors into a space where design becomes a reflection of place, tradition, and the enduring pursuit of essential form.
